You may have already been awarded a grant

You may not realize it, but you may already have been a beneficiary of a government grant. Most college financial aid packages, for example, include a Pell grant. In 2008 alone, the Federal government awarded approximately 5,600,000 Pell grants.. And many of us have gotten a coupon from the Federal government to enable our old TVs for the digital age.

Government Money for Individuals

All programs funded by government agencies in 2008 can be found in the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) at http://www.cfda.gov/or embedded below. The catalog contains information on lots of different kinds of grants and programs and can be a little confusing. There are basically two main kinds of grants for individuals: Project grants and direct payments for specified uses. We sifted through the 2205-page catalogue and put together a list for you.

The tables include the name of the grant, its number so that you can research it in the catalogue below, the agency that awards the grant and its code. The letter “B” indicates a project grant and the letter “C” indicates a direct payment for a specific use. Other letters of the alphabet stand for other types of assistance besides grants, such as loans. You can find the key to the other types of assistance in the catalogue.
