If you are ill and you need medical care but you can’t pay for regular treatment, you can go to a federally funded
community health center near you. To find a health center near you, go to findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov. Enter your address and click the Find a Health Center button at that site, and the health centers near you will be listed.
These health centers offer more than emergency treatment when you are ill. You can get checkups, complete care if you are pregnant, immunizations for your children, dental care and prescription drugs, and mental-health and substance-abuse care if you need it. All of this is available at little or no cost based on your income.
I have learned that our community health centers are flooded with clients. If you need this service, to use it efficiently, make an appointment for a checkup (this routinely takes maybe three months). This will put you in the community center's system. After you are in the system, you can get care when you need it.
